CANTORÍA

Jorge Losana, direction

A young Spanish ensemble—serious, more than thoroughly prepared, overflowing with talent and a desire to do things well—capable of performing Renaissance polyphony at a level comparable to that of the finest foreign ensembles, and with its own distinctive idiosyncrasy.
El País, 2024
Cantoría is a vocal group specializing in the performance of Iberian Renaissance and early Baroque vocal polyphony. Freshness, naturalness, and a special connection with the audience have become hallmarks of this ensemble's performances, which are beginning to build a remarkable national and international career. They have performed in more than 14 countries, bringing Renaissance music to the most important festivals throughout Europe. In 2024, they were ensemble-in-residence at the Oude Muziek Utrecht Festival and have made their debuts at the Laus Polyphoniae in Antwerp , the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam , and Wigmore Hall in London.

Furthermore, they have completed their first US tour and were ensemble-in-residence at the Ambronay Festival . Also noteworthy is their participation this year in the All'Improvviso Festival in Gliwice, Poland, the Brighton Early Music Festival, and the Castell de Peralada.

In this new adventure , their director, Jorge Losana, accompanied by soprano Inés Alonso and high tenor Oriol Guimerà , are joined by collaborating musicians such as Lluís Arratia (baritone), Victoria Cassano (soprano), Marc de la Linde (viola da gamba), Pablo FitzGerald (vihuela), Marina López (organ), Joan Seguí (organ), Jeremy Nastasi (theorbo), Rita Morais (soprano), Belén Herrero (mezzo-soprano), Martí Doñate (tenor), Juan Manuel Morales (countertenor) and Daniel Folqué (countertenor), among others.

In 2022, they released their first CD at the Ambronay Cultural Center (France), dedicated to the Ensaladas of Mateo Flecha, which garnered important awards such as the “Diapason Découverte” label , the “ Melómano de Oro ” award, and the “ Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik ”. That same year, they presented their innovative show “Lenguas Malas”, a performance that explores satire and language through Spanish Renaissance music.

Founded in 2016 within the framework of the ECOS International Early Music Festival of Sierra Espuña (Murcia) and originating from the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya-ESMUC (Barcelona), Cantoría has distinguished itself through the freshness, youthfulness, and intimacy of its performances. In 2018, they were selected for the EEEmerging+ program , where they won the Audience Prize at the Ambronay Festival and continued as part of the project for three more years (2018-2021).

In addition to their participation in major early music festivals, they have performed at prestigious institutions such as the Prado Museum, the National Library of Spain and the Library of Catalonia.

In 2024, Cantoría embarked on a new phase, expanding both its repertoire and the number of singers, resulting in a significant evolution of its sound and ambitions. For the first time, they developed programs for more singers and a chamber orchestra , a challenge enthusiastically embraced by audiences and critics alike. This new format allows Cantoría to explore other compositions and showcase its greater versatility.

Cantoría also actively collaborates with institutions such as the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the University of Murcia, the ESMUC (Catalan School of Music), Pompeu Fabra University for the dissemination and recovery of the Iberian polyphonic repertoire, and the Complutense Institute of Musical Sciences (ICCMU) . Currently, it receives support from the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM) and the Institute of Cultural Industries and Arts of the Region of Murcia (ICARM).
